Wild Fires in Portugal

Analysis of forest burned areas in Leiria, Portugal

In Pedrógão Grande, Leiria, Portugal, devastating wildfires swept in, probably causing one of the deadliest tragedies within living memory. The fires began in June 2017 as the combination of lightning strikes and adverse weather conditions struck large swaths of forest land fueled by dry vegetation and heavy winds. More than 60 lives were lost, with reports that scores of homes were burnt, apart from the great environmental loss it incurred.

The following analysis has been done on the effects of these wildfires using satellite imagery and remote sensing in Google Earth Engine (GEE). By processing the pre and post-fire Sentinel-2 images, I have computed the NDVI, showing the vegetation health using Near-Infrared and Red bands. The NDVI analysis gave me a representation of changes in vegetation cover before and after the fire, with noticeable areas that experienced heavy reduction because of the intensity of burning.

This workflow underlines the power of remote sensing in understanding wildfire impact, thus providing a great deal of insight into the extent of environmental degradation and assisting in future ecological recovery efforts.
